The Village Ball

A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Marcus Garvey

Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr. was a Jamaican political activist. He was the founder and first President-General of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League.  Ideologically a Black nationalist and Pan-Africanist, his ideas came to be known as Garveyism. Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association form a critical link in Black America’s centuries-long struggle for freedom, justice, and equality.  Garvey’s legacy continues to instill pride and inspiration among many African American people throughout the diaspora.

The Village Ball will take plan August 17th as an enchanting evening featuring African attire, music, dinner, dancing and a raffle.   The Village Ball will provide an opportunity for the greater Akron community to come together, recognize and celebrate the life and legacy of Marcus Garvey.  Awards of recognition will be presented to those who have contributed in a meaningful way to the legacies of Marcus Garvey, Sojourner Truth and John Brown.

There are many ways to support our efforts. Those interested can participate by donating, being a sponsor, purchasing an ad (FP-$150, HP-$80, QP-$50, BC-$25), being a patron ($10), purchasing a dinner ticket ($50), and/or purchasing a raffle ticket ($5).

The goal is to raise $10,000 in support of the Akron Rites of Passage Institute’s Legacy Building Project
